What I like about this book is the author's real life experience as well as his extensive background research. What an encouraging book for those who are seeking employment in these tough economic times. But it is more than that, it points us to creation of an effective job search process in our changing employment environment and how to create long-term personal fulfillment in the process. There is much to glean from this author but a key point is the statistics of where to find your next job and career and to narrow your search to fit your niche. And what is your niche and where will you find employment for your niche.He reminds us that without a narrowly focused job search we will be going in a hundred different directions without the focused, concerted effort needed with the limited time we have for such a search. He points us to "narrow your focus of job search (titles, location, type of organization, industry, non- profit, for- profit, etc.)" that best fits you. He also provides assistance in the best methods and where not to look. Where not to look is exactly were most of us would begin but the returns for those efforts have the least payoff. .
Some of the facts the author raises are hard to take but well worth heeding. I as well of many of you have been through the loop of job searches and career moves and this author has some great advice and insight for us.
You owe it to yourself to read this book before or as you begin your search...it's powerful.

I actually had mixed emotions while reading this book. So much negativity. Sure, the truth was told in the pages, but it gave me a panic attack! If you want your kids to go to college, don't let them read this book. I don't know. It sort of makes me glad that I only got an associates degree I had the fun of college but didn't have to pay back HUGE loans. Mr Smith says that after all those years in college and all the loans, the benefit of the learning will only last 5 years. Depressing! I appreciated that charts were included but many of them were hard to read. The ones with more than one line were too close in color to read without eye strain. The discussion hinted that we will only be able to survive on the money we make. Unless the family is already well-off (RICH) we won't be able to call what we are doing "living". My personal life has already taught me this. I guess I was hoping for something to give me hope. This book didn't do that.
Boring read but it makes a lot of sense.
Good analysis of the emerging makeover of industry, technology, and communication. The author gives good advice to follow your passion, he also advised to play it safe in some instances and not in others. It's wise to know when taking a chance is a good play and when it isn't.
Becoming Generation Flux is a great and easy read. The job market is more challenging than ever before and this book accurately describes the current market place and the challenges that many of us have or will experience. He offers great advice to all whether you are currently employed or an optimistic college graduate. I recommend this book to anyone who is struggling in their career or is looking to enter the job market.
“Becoming Generation Flux” is an excellent analysis of how education, the workplace and career management are becoming much more fluid and unpredictable. From the author’s discussion of the increasing costs of education and its impact on graduates to how one can no longer count on steady employment with one organization throughout a career, it is clear Miles Smith understands the changing career landscape. He is able to speak from personal experience regarding unemployment and career transition and what it takes to successfully navigate through that experience. I recommend this book for those just beginning to look at a career path and educational choices all of the way through those hitting the home stretch on their career as it speaks to all phases of one's career journey.
