Just as it seems life is opening before Violet with unlimited possibilities for her future, her hometown of Atlanta is devastated by a citywide fire, and her idolized older brother heads off to France as an officer in the Great War. Violet's safe, tight-knit family is about to be tested beyond anything they have ever experienced, and her dreams for the future keep colliding with forces outside her control and a rapidly changing culture. While she tries to rebuild her life from loss after loss, two very different young ministers both profess her place in their own dreams for the future. As her childhood faith is shaken to its very core, Violet must determine who she truly is, what she most wants, and what it means to love.

Some Through the Fire edition by Jennifer Q Hunt Religion Spirituality eBooks

A well written entertaining Historical book. During and after WW1, including the Atlanta fire and the Police Strike in Boston. This is the story of a family and their relatives with others included. It also shows us how it felt to have lived during and after the Atlanta fire destroying all you owned. It also includes the Police Strike and what it was like then. - both of these I have read about but this book brings it all to life -
But this story is also about a very selfish, conniving cousin and a young woman who seeks God and want to help others, including those who cut her down. Deaths & near deaths from sickness; times of not giving up, even if you think you will not live very long; love, endurance, joy, and a few chuckles along the way.

Some Through the Fire edition by Jennifer Q Hunt Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

This book spoke to me especially since i have been going through trials lately. Dear Ves is such an inspiration. She clings to the Word through her valleys, and brings those around her to faith.
It is a wonderful tale about a girl learning the things which are most important. This is one of my new favorites.
I had a wonderful time reading this book. Having grown up near Atlanta, it was a taste of home. The time period is spot on for WWI and just after. Overall the characters are believable and memorable. The descriptions are breathtaking at times. I certainly felt like I was there with the characters. I only wish the book had been a little longer to allow for the final connection and resolve. Thank you, Jennifer, for a masterful work.
The plot was very interesting, it kept me wanting to come back,. The characters were real, not perfect but having problems that needed to be dealt with. I would highly recommend this book not only for entertainment but uplifting. The book is presented God as the answer to life's deepest needs,.
I enjoyed this book and the characters. The overall organization into three parts was effective as the author moved us through the main character's life and spiritual journey. I found the different period settings fascinating; the author impressed me with how well she included realistic historical details. Although it was a somewhat longer book, she used it well to develop the characters and include more action. Couldn't put it down!
This was a great story set in Atlanta and Boston (and some overseas war scenes) from 1918 to 1920. Through the three years, we see the characters come through trials of fire with faith, hope and love. I enjoyed the references to Anne of Green Gables, and there were some other interesting mentions (Little Women, O. Henry). I thought I read some similarities to Grace Livingston Hill also (the very nasty relative who requires tact and patience to endure). This was more than just a romance book - it was a challenging book about Christian growth and character with heroes and heroines to admire. Very highly recommended!
This is a beautiful story. I love how it focuses on Ves’ struggles with her faith as she goes through life’s trials, rather than focusing on romance (which, yes, does come up rather late in the book). In fact, in several places the story ministered to me and helped me with some of my own recent faith struggles.

It is generally a well-written story with believable characters and history-based events that help keep the plot moving forward. My only negative critique is that at the end I was left up in the air about Harry and Marilyn – but maybe there will be a sequel? The author didn’t mention that one is forthcoming, but this is a brand new book and I suspect that is the plan.

Recommended for people of faith who enjoy reading about how others triumph over the temptation to give up and give in.
You'll go on an adventure for three years with Violet Sweet, aka "Ves," in SOME THROUGH THE FIRE by Jennifer Q. Hunt. Those three years begin when Ves is 16 and life ahead looks everything bright, that is until that brightness radiates from the 1917 fire in Atlanta, Georgia that devastated thousands of residents including Ves' family. Then her precious older brother is sent to Europe to fight in World War I, and life continues in Atlanta with unexpected ups and downs. This is a wonderful story of a young woman learning just how deep her faith in God really is, and what truly means the most in life. It's Christian historical fiction front-row-center. Loved it and highly recommend it!
